Many of India’s past heritage structures have lost their charm with changes in time but to this day they still represent magnificent pieces of architecture. Bhuvanagiri Fort located in Bhuvanagiri, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri District, Telangana, India is one such structure. It is a massive impregnable structure erected by Chalukya ruler, Tribhuvanamalla Vikramaditya VI, and the fort is named after him. Bhongir fort’s history is traced back to the 10th century. Initially, it was called Tribhuvanagiri, renamed later as Bhuvanagiri and eventually, it has become Bhongir Fort. The town of Bhuvanagiri/Bhongir derives its name from this splendid fort, which stands on a monolithic rock.

Batholiths are massive igneous rocks that are formed when molten magma cools and solidifies and often run kilometers deep into the earth. It is spread across an impressive area of 50 acres at a height of around 500 feet over the top of an enormous rock formation. It resembles an unusual egg-shaped structure along with two main entry points in turn covered with huge rocks has perilous drops on all sides and commands never-ending views of the region. The fort that is encircled in a moat has an underground chamber that is believed to connect Golconda fort located 50 km away. The fort also witnessed a glorious period under queen Rudrama Devi and her grandson Prataparudra’s rule.

The naturally impregnable fort, once surrounded by a moat for added defense, has an assortment of ruined structures all along the way to the top. The giant rock has a natural cleft which separates the fort into lower and upper regions, and the cleft is lined with many small ponds.

To reach to the top of the fort you have to hike for good steep rock. The small steps along with handrail is available and it helps to climb comfortably. Later the steps finishes and you have to walk carefully on the rough surface maintaining your balance and holding handrail. Make sure you use hiking shoes or any shoes with proper grip sole. Slippery sole may cause trouble and hurt you for sure.

A beautiful dilapidated pavilion stands at the summit of the hillock, resembling the Bala Hisar Baradari, the highest structure in the Golconda Fort in Hyderabad.

The nearly vertical walls of the hillock are ideal for adventure sports, and Bhongir has a rock climbing school offering a variety of courses in bouldering, rock climbing and rappelling.
